More Winter Health Tips

We’ve passed the shortest day of the year (December 21st) and the days are starting to get longer, bit by bit. I have to say, the thing I like least about the winter months is all the darkness! It makes me want to curl up in bed and hibernate like a grumpy bear. If you need a little extra help to stay healthy this winter, read on!

  1. Make sure you get some outside time. There isn’t much sunlight during the winter months, so enjoy what light there is! Try doing your daily exercise outside instead of inside — try snowshoeing or cross country skiing if you’re snowed under. The light exposure can help you get a natural mood boost!
  2. Watch your teeth during winter sports. A slip or fall during skiing, skating, or snowboarding can cause some serious damage to your pearly whites! Consider using a sport guard to protect your upper teeth; an over-the-counter sport guard will cost you about $10.
  3. Protect your eyes. UVA and UVB rays are dangerous all year round. Wear goggles to protect your eyes during skiing and other snow sports. And don’t forget UV rated sunglasses when you are outside.
  4. Keep the pros and cons of drinking in mind. Red wine is a great source of antioxidants; experts recommend drinking a glass each day unless you are pregnant or have other health issues that prevent you from drinking alcohol. Don’t go overboard! Pace yourself by drinking a non-alcoholic beverage between each alcoholic beverage at parties.
  5. Sweeten meal times with sweet potatoes. One medium-sized sweet potato gives you four grams of fiber plus plenty of vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron, and beta-carotene.
  6. Think of your heart! You want to see next year’s holiday season, right? Take time to assess your heart health. Ask your doctor to test your blood pressure, cholesterol level, and blood glucose levels. Ask where you need improvement to protect your heart for years and holidays to come.
