I am a Mormon Mommy blogger. I am not famous in the blogging world, but I have a handful of friends that like to read what I post. I have heard about an article that was written recently by a self-proclaimed feminist, atheist. She admits to being addicted to Mormon Mom blogs. To read the full article go here.
I heard about this article on none other than a fellow mormon mommy blogger’s blog. The article was written tastefully, and shared some fun blogs that you should check out if you aren’t following them already. She refers to us as having, “shiny, happy lives”. And, she is fascinated by the women that write these blogs that are so different from her. She almost writes the article as if she is slightly envious in some way, but not really. Like, she thinks that the lives these women are portraying are what she wants, but then again, not really.
The stir came from all the comments that were posted following her article. There were lots of nasty comments on both sides. I was surprised at some of these comments, but again, not really. I was not at all offended by her article. Why should I be? She goes on and on about how content and wonderful these women’s lives seem. She is bewildered by something that is so foreign to her. Domestic Bliss.
But, are we all shiny, happy people? I think these women are not the norm. While we do strive daily, sometimes hourly (in my case), to put on rose-colored glasses and see the positive in life, we are still normal women with problems. Normal women that may get bored being housewives, and want something more. We are normal women that may suffer from depression, or unhappiness in our marriage. We still fight and argue with our husbands. We still get mad when our kids disobey and act like heathens in public. We may even swear once in a while. Gasp! I know.
I follow some of the blogs she referenced myself. As a mormon mommy, I am equally amused at how simple their lives seem. Maybe it has nothing to do with the fact that these women are mormon, but has more to do with the fact that these women are extremely positive, upbeat, and stylish. Even in the Mormon world, this is not the “norm”. Or maybe, just maybe the blog is a way to share the positive in their lives when there is already so much negativity that exists in the world.
I liked the article. I found it amusing. I also found myself getting sucked into some of these blogs myself. We all want shiny, happy lives don’t we? Mormon, or not.
