I am not one to be very hip with the music scene whether it be in or out of the church. However, it seems like lately, I’ve been hearing about a few LDS artists that I love, and am thinking that I need to be more in tune with the music scene. After all, many of these artists play often in UT, or are from UT, and it would be fun to go to some local concerts and hear them.
The first one that I want to share is probably not “new” to a lot of people, but she’s new to me. And, I love her stuff! Her name is Mendy Gledhill and I first heard about her when I was watching a video on one of my favorite Mormon Mommy Blogs. The music that this video was set to was so sweet. I wanted more! So, I googled her name, and ran across her site where I instantly loved pretty much everything! Her songs are soothing and romantic, with a little vintage flair thrown in. She is not focused on just becoming an LDS artist, but her music has a little something everyone will love, whether LDS or not.
When I was visiting my sister recently, she showed me a band, called The Lower Lights, that a friend of hers had told her about that was all about taking LDS hymns and turning them into folky tunes. These songs will be hymns that you will find yourself happy to listen to on Sunday morning, or anytime when you are looking for a spiritual uplift. I love the sound they have, I love folk music, and I love hymns. So, you can’t really ask for a better combination.
Last, I heard about another band called Fictionist that kind of just dropped into my inbox. They are in a contest to be on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine. They are made up of 5 RMs that studied Jazz at BYU, and I have to say, I really like their sound. Again, this group is not stuck strictly in the LDS genre, but these 5 guys are hoping to make it big. I haven’t listened to all of their songs yet, but found myself wanting to hear more.
I admire people that pursue their passion. Whether it be music, the arts, or whatever, LDS members of the church are full of talent, and something special that people notice, but can’t quite put their finger on. And, as fellow members of the church, why not try and help support that passion?
