It’s almost summer, and Mom will flip for cute flip flops you can make yourself. Start with a pair of inexpensive flip flops you can find at any discount store or drug store (I’ve even seen them at craft stores lately), and then use any of the ideas below.
You can decorate flip flops many ways for Mom, so pick a way that will best reflect her personality or match a favorite summer outfit.
1. Flower Power: Choose a fake flower that you can cut the stem off of and will lay relatively flat. You also want to make sure it doesn’t have any petals that will bend down and poke her toes. Glue the flower on to the flip flop strap in the middle. Use a hot glue gun (with parental help only!) or a strong glue such as E-6000 or Crafter’s Pick Super Glue. You can also glue smaller flowers all along the straps.
2. Fluffy Fun: Buy a boa at the craft store. Glue the boa to the straps of the flip flops. Use a strong glue such as E-6000 or Crafter’s Pick Super Glue. Boo-boop-dee-doo!
3. Ragtime: Cut a bunch of strips of soft fabric about half an inch wide and six inches long. Tie each strip around the flip flop strap. Tie the strips very close together and cover the whole strap.
4. Poofy Pom Poms: Glue pom poms all along the straps of the flip flops. Use a strong glue like hot glue (with parental help only!), or E-6000 or Crafter’s Pick Super Glue. Use a large one in the center and smaller ones on the sides, or make them all the same size, but vary the colors.
5. Trace around the sole of the flip flops onto terry cloth or soft fake fur to pamper Mom’s feet. Glue some of the same or contrasting fabric to the straps.
To round out the gift, you might want to give Mom a bottle of new nail polish, or maybe a gift certificate for a pedicure.
