I talk a lot about motivation when it comes to fitness. That’s because it is key to starting up and maintaining a fit lifestyle.
Motivation has two general definitions. The first is “the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way.”
So this means that an individual’s reasons for wanting to be fit are unique to that person. For some people it is to get healthier. This can be a huge motivation for those who are diagnosed with certain types of health conditions such as heart disease or diabetes.
For other people their reason is to lose weight, tone up or gain strength. Then there are other types of reasons such as to save a marriage or to get the attention of someone else. Reasons can greatly range.
The second definition of motivation is “the general desire or willingness of someone to do something.” In addition to having a reason, there is a desire at the root of all motivation.
For some the desire is minimal but for others it is pretty intense. This will play a huge role in your success.
Of course, if you don’t enjoy what you are doing, your motivation won’t last long. So when you have decided to implement healthier eating or exercise, choose what you will enjoy.
It could be taking a daily walk with a friend, joining an aerobics class, going to the gym or working out to a fitness program in your home. With so many options available, it would be difficult to find something you can’t enjoy.
Motivation can’t always happen on your own, however. It helps if there is someone who can hold you accountable, and who will cheer you on. This can come in the way of a fitness trainer, your spouse or a friend.
Of course, the bottom line (despite motivation) is that it will take work to begin or maintain a fit lifestyle. My hope is that your motivation finds it to be worth it.
