It is the twenty fifth anniversary of many famous films from 1982. I was but a youngster then (19) and going to the movies was one of my favorite activities (still is!).
It is hard to believe it has been twenty-five years since Drew Barrymore graced the big screen as the adorable Gertie. It was the highest grossing movie that year and won three of the nine Oscars for which it was nominated. E.T. also won two Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture and Best Original Score for a Motion Picture. Director Steven Spielberg says that E.T. remains his favorite movie.
Okay, I know many people love Rocky, but I think Rocky III is my favorite. It features Mr. T as the bad guy, Clubber Lang. And what a bad guy he was! The presence of Clubber forces former adversaries Rocky and Apollo Creed to band together to defeat him. In my opinion, the whole franchise went downhill after Rocky III.
Poltergeist
I remember seeing Poltergeist at the theater…well, at least most of it. To me, this is one of the scariest films ever made. I still cannot watch it alone in the dark. It does not help when you know all the behind the scenes creepiness that occurred when filming this movie or the unusual deaths of many who starred in this film. This is another Spielberg classic from 1982, a very busy year for the movie master.
An Officer and a Gentleman
Ah, just the mere mention of this film title makes me sigh. I remember seeing this one for the first time at the drive-in. Richard Gere is so handsome in his Navy uniform as we see him turn from selfish loner to faithful friend and lover. The film also features great co-starring roles by David Keith (who would co-star with E.T.’s Drew Barrymore in 1984’s Firestarter), Debra Winger (hot off her Urban Cowboy success), and Lou Gossett Jr., who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Gunnery Sergeant Foley.
Stay tuned for more of my favorite films from 1982!
