Movies Week in Review June 15th – 21st

Welcome to our Week in Review! Wondering what to pop into your DVD player tonight? Here are some ideas for you.

We started out with a review of the romantic comedy “Sweet Home Alabama,” starring Reese Witherspoon, Josh Lucas, and Patrick Dempsey. When Melanie receives the wedding proposal of a lifetime, she’s beyond thrilled, but has to take care of a little business before she can proceed with her plans. That business involves getting a divorce from her previous husband. This movie features moments of comedy as well as a look into what’s really important in life.

P.S. I Love You” features Hilary Swank as a young woman who’s been widowed and must come to terms with her grief, aided in her journey by letters her husband wrote her while he was still living, knowing she would need help to start her life over again. This movie is emotional and heart-wrenching, but also has moments that didn’t need to be there.

Annabelle’s Wish” is the story of a young calf who wants to be one of Santa’s reindeer. When Santa comes to the farm and grants the animals the ability to speak for one day, she shares her wish with Santa and gets to fly right along with him. She also helps Billy, a young boy who has been orphaned, find the home of his heart. This is a tender tale just right for the Christmas season, but I see nothing wrong with celebrating Christmas in June!

The Kissing Bandit” stars Frank Sinatra and Kathryn Grayson and spoofs “Zorro” and the other old Western bandit movies. When Ricardo comes back to California to take over the family business, he thinks he’ll be running a hotel. But when he discovers his father was actually known as “the Kissing Bandit,” he decides it would be even more fun to take over that line of work. The problem is, he’s a terrible bandit. This movie features some great music and dancing, and it’s a lot of fun to watch the parodies.

The Toast of New Orleans” stars Mario Lanza and Kathryn Grayson as opera singers from two entirely different walks of life. She’s reached diva status and is spoiled and pampered, while he is a fisherman out of the bayou and only wants to sing to earn enough money for a new fishing boat. She would rather have nothing to do with him, but recognizes that he’s her ticket to a European tour. Taking him under her wing to teach him some manners, they inevitably fall in love in this beautifully musical film.

What could be more joyful than a tap-dancing penguin? Nothing comes to mind! “Happy Feet” stars Mumble the penguin as a little guy who’s different from all the rest – when he hatches, it’s with a song in his heart and a rhythm in his feet. This movie shows the importance of keeping balance in the earth’s resources while entertaining with dance.

We ended the week with a review of “Mad Money,” the new film starring Queen Latifa, Katie Holmes and Diane Keaton as three federal reserve employees who steal quite a bit of tax money, each with their own reasons for doing so. This film probably isn’t going to the be one you talk about around the water cooler – our reviewer felt it was lacking in depth and contained far too many innuendos for enjoyment.

We hope you enjoyed this week in review and that you’ll find something you’ll enjoy in this line-up.
