Movies Week in Review June 9th-14th

Welcome to our Movies Week in Review! If you’ve been wondering what’s hot and what’s not, you’ll want to be sure to read the following reviews.

We began the week with Lyn’s review of “The Adventures of Milo and Otis,” about a puppy and a kitten who become friends. Unlike other movies that feature animals as their main characters, Milo and Otis do not speak, but rather, a narrator provides a running dialogue for us. It’s an enjoyable film, but not one packed with a lot of action.

Next, Valorie took us on a tour of “I am Legend,” which pleasantly surprised her. It starred Will Smith as a military scientist, who is the only survivor of a deadly plague that wiped out New York City, either killing everyone or turning them into zombies. It’s a movie that makes you think and appreciate the power of sacrifice.

Because I Said So” was endured by Heather, who sincerely disliked the film. Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore play a mother and daughter, both trying to figure out life, and both doing a pretty rotten job of it. Heather encourages us to save our money.

Lyn made us feel nostalgic with a look at “Where the Red Fern Grows.” It’s the story of a boy and his desire to own a dog, but his family is too poor to afford one. He saves his money and gets two, and they become the best hunting dogs around. Tragedy befalls the dogs (I remember crying my eyes out at this point in the movie) but family ties bring it all together in the end.

I reviewed “It Happened in Brooklyn,” a song and dance film starring Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Durante, and Kathryn Grayson. Peter Lawford of the sincere eyebrows was also a cast member, wooing and then winning the fair Grayson, as Sinatra realizes that he didn’t know how good he had it.

We ended the week with Lyn’s review of “Eight Below,” the story of a man who depends on his dogs for his transportation and his survival in Antarctica as he makes his living as a guide for researchers who come to the area.

We hope you enjoyed this week’s selection of movies, and that you’ll join us again here in Movie Reviews!
