Movies Week in Review – March 31st – April 5th

Looking for something fun to add to your movie wish list? Here are some suggestions for you to consider next time you’re on your way to the video store.

If you’re into classic musicals, you’ll want to take a look at “Strike Up the Band.” This movie stars Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland in one of their collaborations and tells the story of two teenagers who want to raise money to go to an audition for their dance band. They put on a show to raise the cash, but it seems they’re running into a lot of opposition as they try to reach their dreams.

I’ll See You in My Dreams” is the dramatized version of the life of Gus Kahn, noted lyricist. Starring Doris Day as the long-suffering wife and Danny Thomas as Kahn, we see how such famous musical numbers such as “My Buddy,” “Pretty Baby,” “I’ll See You in My Dreams,” and “It Had to Be You” came into being.

Xanadu” . . . well, this one was odd. Picture muses from Mount Olympus who come to earth to inspire an aging Gene Kelly to open a roller rink. Look pretty strange? Well, you’ve got an accurate picture. This movie was the vehicle for some of Olivia Newton-John’s most popular songs, but I say, get the soundtrack and don’t worry about the movie itself.

Then I had a little fun compiling a list. “Tristi’s Favorite Gene Kelly Movies” takes a peek at some of the films I just love, including “Singin’ in the Rain” and “Summer Stock.” If you like Gene Kelly, you’ll want to take a closer look at these films.

We wrapped up the week with “The Bugs Bunny Roadrunner Movie,” which is filled with classic cartoons featuring Marvin the Martian, Pepe le Pew, and Elmer Fudd. We even see a little Daffy Duck as the intrepid Duck Dodgers.

We hope you enjoyed this week’s review and hope to see you again here in Movies!
