Planning a move? Here is a checklist of what you need to do.

8 weeks before the move

Set a date for a garage or estate sale, or make arrangements for a donation pick up.

Contact your children’s new school to find out how to register. Ask the old school to begin the transfer process and make any paperwork requests.

Contact your insurance companies to notify them of your move date and any changes if applicable.

Start your move file with folders (either on your computer or in a file folder or binder. Include a to do list, and sections for related receipts, estimates, forms and other paperwork.

Notify the post office of your move date. Fill out the form at the post office or online, so your mail will be forwarded to your new address.

6 weeks before the move

Decide on how your belongings will be moved. Line up a moving company and give them the dates of the move, if applicable.

If you are moving 45 minutes or more away from your current location, ask your professional providers for referrals. This includes doctors, lawyers, accountants, etc. Make sure that you arrange for copies for any necessary records. Don’t forget a veterinarian for your pet.

If you are currently renting, set your schedule with your landlord.

4 weeks before the move

Set aside some time to de-clutter your home, if you haven’t already done so. Ask yourself if it is all worth paying to take with you.

Notify your utility companies of disconnect and connect dates.

Notify other services as needed, such as trash collectors, recycling companies and newspaper delivery.

Do any final lawn maintenance if necessary and then drain lawnmowers and other power equipment of gas and oil so they can be safely moved.

Begin packing any items that you can live without until your move day.
