It looks as though the impossible may very well be possible after all. Against all odds, it appears Paris Hilton is moving from the denial phase of her sentencing to a slow acceptance.
According to news reports, the hotel heiress has decided she won’t appeal the 45-day jail term she was sentenced to earlier this month for violating probation. When I first heard the news I was skeptical, but in fact, court documents confirm that the 26-year-old socialite is abandoning her appeal.
Whereas I don’t think it is necessarily cause for celebration, it does indicate the heiress is now prepared to face the consequences of violating probation. The news comes after 10 days of massive media hype surrounding a judge’s decision to send Hilton to jail.
You’ll recall the model/singer/actress/party girl was ordered to report to jail by June 5 for violating the terms of her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. Immediately following the judge’s ruling Hilton pouted before paparazzi calling the sentence unfair. She then fired her publicist, blaming him for not informing her that she shouldn’t be driving with a suspended license–less than 48 hours she rehired him. Then in a move that shocked even the most seasoned members of the judicial process some crazed Hilton fan posted an online petition to persuade California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to pardon the actress from her jail sentence. Never mind that the actor-politician said he couldn’t be bothered with such lunacy.
Hilton’s change of heart comes on the heels of an announcement by the Los Angeles County sheriff’s department that said that the socialite would spend a minimum of 23 days in jail.
“She will do her full time, minus 22 days, because of a state jail policy encouraging good inmate behavior,” a Sheriff’s spokesman told reporters.
According to the spokesperson, Hilton will be locked in a 12-by-8-foot cell approximately 22 hours a day, minus one hour of recreation time and 20 minutes each for three meals. She will also likely have a cellmate. Can you imagine how many TV talk show hosts will be clamoring for an interview with Hilton’s cellmate?
