Moving Your Pets By Car

When relocating your family at pets, you basically have two options for getting your pets there: you can move them by air, or you can move them by car. Moving your pets on your own, in your own vehicle has its advantages and disadvantages.

What will you need?

  1. A carrier or kennel. This is useful both for safe car travel and for overnight stays if you are moving a long distance.
  2. Collar and leash. Don’t let any of your pets roam freely in an unfamiliar area; they may try to escape or simply get lost.
  3. Current rabies tag, identification tag, and a travel tag. The travel tag should include your destination address, cell phone numbers, and the name and contact information for a friend or family member who is also willing to come fetch a lost pet.
  4. Food and water dishes. You may not be able to give your pets refreshments while driving, but you should stop often for water breaks. Smaller pets especially can become dehydrated quickly during travel.
  5. A favorite toy can be a welcome distraction on a long ride.
  6. Treats to reward good behavior.
  7. Bags for picking up after your pet.

Travel Dos and Don’ts

  1. Don’t let your pet ride with his head out the window.
  2. Don’t let your pet annoy the driver, or move around too much. My dog Miko used to try to turn around in the front seat and would accidentally move the car from drive into neutral.
  3. Do have your pet’s nails clipped before the trip to prevent scratches and damage to the upholstery.
  4. Don’t feed your pet immediately before hitting the road. Give your dog a few hours to digest and eliminate waste.
  5. Do stop at regular intervals for water and exercise breaks.
  6. Don’t leave your pet in a closed car; heat can quickly become excessive.
  7. Do be careful around strangers. Even the most gentle pet may be unsettled by travel and may not be acting like him or herself.
