Calling all muggles! Have you heard the MuggleNet podcast? This podcast is such a fun way for Harry Potter fans to spend an hour or so.
What impresses me the most is that show is created entirely by teenagers and young twenty somethings. These young people, one from Britain, the others from all around the United States, took something they were interested in, created a website, and then started this podcast. They have over 50,000 listeners a week, and are currently at 107 podcasts! I find this very inspiring and plan to use the podcast as example with students.
The seventh and last book of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, came out this summer. You might think Potter fans would be out of things to discuss. They may not have quite as much to talk about, but these kids aren’t done. They are still discussing plot points, rumors of future Rowling writings, top Harry Potter news stories, updates concerning the filming of the Harry Potter films.
Your teenage Harry Potter fans in particular will enjoy the show, the rants and good natured kidding. While the show’s cast does sometimes talk about someone being “hot”, the shows I’ve heard are nothing that would embarrass a mother and teen listening together. The Mugglecast site promotes themselves as “Reassuringly Nerdy”, and it is that. But true fans will love hearing about the visits to the Order of the Phoenix movie sets. They will also enjoy the debates over characters and the questions that are posed by listeners. And not only do the podcasters also talk about birthdays, haircuts, starting college, and traveling.
You can select any of the past podcasts to listen to. This past summer they took their show on the road. Their adventures are a lot of fun to hear. You can even download the transcripts if you’d rather read than listen. And don’t forget to vote in the listener’s poll. This week it’s Griphook vs. Kreacher. Who would win that duel?
