Mulching Leaves

I know, there is an old saying, “Don’t try to tidy up nature.” Well, I actually don’t know if it is old or not, but I have been saying it for years. In this neck of the woods, it is definitely time for the Fall leaf clean up. The leaves are everywhere, much to the delight of my three children, who take the opportunity to jump in the piles as soon as they are formed.

Of course, all of those colorful leaves have to be picked up eventually or disposed of in some way. Here in the Home Blog, we’ll be sharing some tips on how to take care of your leaf clean up. And don’t forget to read Sherry’s excellent article about leaf burning.

Mulch ‘Em

One easy way to take care of your leaves, and one that we employed for many years in our small yard (in our old home) was by mulching the leaves. This was really easy, although it required some regular upkeep. Basically, you use a mulching mower to mow your lawn. The mower also chops up the leaves into small pieces. You can either bag these pieces automatically on your mower, leave them as is to nourish your lawn, move them to a compost pile or rake them up and dispose of them. Which method you choose will depend on how large a yard you have, how many leaves you have, what the time frame was between mulching and if you have a compost pile.

If you choose to mulch your leaves, you’ll want to do it on a regular basis, at least every week and perhaps twice a week when the leaves really start falling down. You don’t want the leaves to be in a thin layer and dry. But it will save you from having to rake and bag them.
