Music and Marriage

How important a role does music play in your marriage? Many couples have a special song that is their song. It may be the one they first danced to, the one that was playing when you met or when he proposed. It may simply be a song that captures how you feel about your spouse.

Tristi talked about sappy love songs and I’d hazard a guess most of us have a place for them in our lives. They are songs that make you look at your marriage partner and smile.

For Mick and me our song is You’re my World. It’s not that Cilla Black had such amazing voice, it’s the words which express what we feel for each other. They are the words inscribed inside each of our wedding rings.

Other songs might be those that particularly evoke special moments like the birth of a child and we have a couple of those in our lives too.

I admit I’m a sucker for love songs. There are some where the words have special meaning. Sonny and Cher’s I Got You Babe came out when Mick and I were teenagers and in love. Since in those days we barely had a dollar to bless ourselves, many of the words rang true for us. We were never going to have much in the way of money but we had each other and that was all important. It’s still the most important thing.

Other songs may come from movies. For us one is Thee I Love from the movie Friendly Persuasion, my favourite movie and one Mick and I have watched several times. It shows the joys and the hard decisions that go to make up a marriage and family life.

Sometimes it is something about that song itself. Still the One by Shania Twain and You’re the Last Man in my Life by Marina Prior are two songs which sum up how I feel about my husband. I’d love to hear about your special song and why it is important in your marriage.
