Primary songs are a great addition to the atmosphere in your home. Unfortunately for my children, I am not a huge fan of most children’s music. I will put it on occasionally, but not that often. One way that I have found a compromise is to play the Primary songs for my children. I enjoy the songs more and I feel as though they are helping my children to grow spiritually as well.
Once you have older children you may want to play hymns as well. This music in the background brings the spirit into your home. It will also help your older children to learn the hymns. I have had experiences when the words of a hymn popped into my head when I needed guidance or comfort. Just exposing them to the hymns is a great way to help your children be able to have that comfort.
You may also want to encourage your children to learn to play one or two hymns. There are many wards that struggle to find pianists. This is a wonderful skill to learn and develop. It is also nice to be able to play the hymns on other instruments as well.
You can have music time together as a family during family home evenings. You may also want to spend time with your younger children to help them learn the Primary songs. You can also help your children learn the actions to many songs as well. My children’s favorite songs are the action ones. These help them developmentally as well.
I have also found that playing the Primary songs in the car help to end the teasing and complaining. It is wonderful to hear my five year old singing along and my two year old getting every few words of the song. You can order the music through the distribution center.
