Music News: April 3, 2009

Quite a few things going on in the music world today.

Rapper Coolio has pleaded not guilty to one felony drug charge and misdemeanor counts of battery and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on March 10 after screeners at the Los Angeles International Airport reportedly found drugs in his luggage. The battery charge was issued when Coolio grabbed the arm of a TSA official who was trying to search his luggage. If convicted, Coolio could face up to three years in prison. Right now, he is out on $10,000 bail and awaiting his next court hearing, which is scheduled for April 20.

In as case of “Better Late Than Never,’ Beatle George Harrison has finally received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame – posthumously of course. On April 14, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will honor Harrison, who died in 2001, at a ceremony in which his widow, Olivia, and son Dhani, are expected to attend. All four Beatles share a Hollywood star, but up until now, Lennon was the only one to have his own individual star. That’s right – George Harrison is getting one before Paul McCartney. With the addition of Harrison’s, there will be a total of 2,382 stars on the Walk.

The backlash against Chris Brown continues as the band Smoke Jumpers now has a song that criticizes him. The song “My Flow So Tight” contains a line which says Chris Brown should get his…uh, well, behind kicked only in less kind terms.

The group is calling the song “the official Chris Brown dis record” on their web site. One member of the group, C.W. Griz, said that he didn’t feel that people in the music industry were as critical of Brown as they should be for the Rihanna incident. He said, “I was really upset with the way a lot of celebrities and people are handling the situation. Not enough people were speaking out against Chris Brown. What he did was a thousand percent wrong.” Griz went on to say that a portion of the proceeds from the song would be donated to charities that help battered women.
