ELVIS IN HAWAII
Elvis fans will soon have another reason to visit Hawaii. Plans are in the works to immortalize the star of “Blue Hawaii” in bronze at the site of his historic 1973 concert “Elvis: Aloha From Hawaii.”
According to a Honolulu newspaper, a life-sized bronze statute of the King wearing his signature flare-legged pants and big-collared, bejeweled shirt will be unveiled in July outside the Neal Blaisdell Center (the site of his Hawaii concert) a few blocks from downtown Honolulu.
The project is a joint effort between TV Land and the city and county of Honolulu as a tribute to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Presley’s death at Graceland on August 16, 1977.
“Elvis remains an idol and a hero to so many of us. And because of his time spent here, Hawaii considers him an adopted son,” Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann told reporters. “Elvis will forever remain a part of Hawaii’s identity – from his film ‘Blue Hawaii’ to his 1961 benefit performance to raise money for the USS Arizona Memorial to the historic concert which the sculpture commemorates.”
Hannemann added that the legendary singer’s concert in Hawaii was the first musical event ever sent around the world by satellite. In addition, the resulting live album has since gone platinum five times over.
JUSTIN’S NEW PARTNER
In a previous blog I detailed the unique addition planned for this year’s Grammy Awards that included a chance for you to sing with Justin Timberlake. If you missed Sunday’s show then you didn’t see who walked away with the honor.
Robyn Troup, a 19-year-old singer from Houston, Texas was crowned champ of the “My Grammy Moment” reality TV-style contest. Incidentally, Troup went from Grammy Awards star to “American Idol” reject three days later. On Tuesday’s “American Idol,” Troup was seen getting the boot from the show in an episode that was taped before the Grammys. (Maybe Simon, Randy, and Paula don’t always know a winner when they see one.)
