“My Big Boy Potty” by Joanna Cole

When it comes time to teach your children how use a toilet, many of us can be at a loss. How do you begin to make the transition between diapers and the toilet? The “My Big Girl Potty” and “My Big Boy Potty” books can be a great introduction to the subject for your children.

The picture book tells the story of a girl named Ashley, or a boy named Michael (depending on which version you choose). The child in the book is given a new potty by their parents. Each day the child sits on the potty until eventually they use the potty. The child’s parents, excited about their accomplishment, purchase them big kid underwear, and the child continues to use the potty each day. One day the child forgets that they are not wearing a diaper and wets their pants, their parents explain that all children have accidents and the next day the child is accident free.

The book has tips in the back for parents who have just begun potty training with their children. While some of the tips may seem elementary, they can be invaluable for first time parents who have never tried potty training before.

The book itself is a nice introduction to the subject for your children. It gives them an idea of what to expect with this new potty you’ve brought home, and can be an excellent introduction to a discussion between you can your child about the potty. By the end of the book your child will be excited about learning how to use their potty and the possibility of getting their very own big kid underwear. You and your child can discuss the potty and through your discussion you both can know what to expect.
