My little dog is having potty issues. She is basically driving me out of my mind. I’ve tried everything, I kennel her any time I’m not home and at night while I’m sleeping. Somehow she still finds time to pee on the floor.
I’ve been spending a lot of time lately spot cleaning the carpet and steam cleaning it and I’m learning more and more.
The most important thing is to try to clean up accidents as soon as they occur. This isn’t always possible but once the urine soaks through to the pad it’s really hard to get rid of the smell. I’ve also learned that all those fancy cleaners for spot cleaning and carpet cleaning all contain some type of detergent. If you put detergent on your carpet it will leave a residue and the carpet will get dirtier, faster.
I only use vinegar and water in my steam cleaner. Before I steam clean I always pre treat the areas that she has used as a potty with vinegar, just a little extra stain and smell fighting.
Lately I’ve been putting a little hydrogen peroxide in with the vinegar and water. I read that it will help get rid of the smell. So far, I don’t really know, but I’m hoping it will work. If you use hydrogen peroxide test it on your carpet first, it can have a bleaching effect. My carpet is light so I wasn’t too concerned and I don’t see a difference.
I’m trying to find a long gate for my kitchen so I can just keep the dog in there while she is having issues. I think I need to replace the carpet in the room she has repeatedly gone in, I just can’t seem to get rid of the smell. I’m going to try vinegar and hydrogen peroxide tonight and see if that helps.
Hopefully it will, I can’t afford to replace the carpet right now and getting rid of the dog is not an option.
