I’m very excited — I found out yesterday that I will be helping with a dog transport on Saturday March 25th. The goal is bringing three dogs from a shelter in Virginia to a rescue that will place them in foster homes until forever homes can be found!
My brother has agreed to go with me. We’ll be leaving home (Point Pleasant New Jersey) around 4pm on Saturday and heading south to Newark, Delaware to pick up Betty the beagle and two unnamed puppies. The puppies will ride in crates; Betty can ride in my lap. (That’s one advantage of Mikey coming with me. He can drive and I can cuddle and take pictures!)
The three dogs are coming from the Wythe County Animal Shelter of Lexington, Virginia. Betty the Beagle is headed to a breed specific rescue — Safe Hounds Beagle Rescue of Woodbridge, New Jersey. The puppies are headed to Posh Pets, who are based in New York but will be picking the pups up in Woodbridge. One is a beagle/Chihuahua mix and the other is a shepherd mix; both are 10 weeks old.
I became involved with this particular transport thanks to Drive For Life, a community at LiveJournal for people who need transports and people who want to help with transports. Trip plans are posted at Drive For Life and tagged with what states the route passes through. If you happen to be near one of the routes, you can contact the transport coordinator to offer your services.
Our leg of the transport will be about 100 miles — from Delaware to their final destination in Woodbridge. Mapquest says the whole affair will take between four and five hours from my door back to my door. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon — the open road, bonding with my little brother, and three dogs to wrangle!
Of course I’ll tell you all about it when we get back!
