When I say “cheaters” I’m referring to the TV show Cheaters, which is all about just what its names implies: people being unfaithful to girlfriends/boyfriends, fiancés, and spouses.
Suspicious lovers come to the producers with theories their significant other is being unfaithful, investigators are hired, and the suspected cheater is followed and their actions are documented on film. If the target is caught doing anything (which is almost guaranteed; I have yet to see a show where anyone was innocent), the evidence is then presented to the suspicious lover. Then it’s confrontation time, with cameras still rolling.
Wayne loves this show. I first noticed his fascination with it last February. He was working from home in the front room, I was in my office, but every once in a while I’d sneak out to bug him.
He likes to leave the TV on when he works and I noticed the show because when I came into the room there was a full on brawl in progress.
“What the heck are you watching?” I asked, thinking it was COPS, a show he wouldn’t normally leave running even just for the noise.
“Cheaters.”
“What?”
“Yeah, it’s a riot. They follow these people who are cheating and then the girlfriend or boyfriend gets to confront them. That’s what’s happening now,” he said, nodding to the TV.
I raised my eyebrows and shook my head. Not something I would have picked, but if it floated his boat who was I to judge?
Later on in the afternoon –a.k.a. snack time–I stole into the kitchen, which is right by the front room where Wayne was still hard at work. I took note again what was on (just in case it was something good that I might want to steal away from my own work and take a time out to watch with him) and guess what was on again? Cheaters!
“What’d you do, tape it?”
“No, it’s on all sorts of channels.”
“So you’re having a Cheaters marathon?”
“Basically.”
“Have you really been watching it the entire day?”
“Pretty much. Except when Maury was on.”
Maury’s another of his daytime favorites he likes to watch if he’s ever home.
All I could do was shake my head and laugh. Ever since then if he stumbles across an episode of Cheaters he stops to watch.
I don’t know why he likes the show so much, but I have to admit it is kind of entertaining. I think we all kind of wonder what happens when someone cheats, don’t we?
What exactly do they do? How do they get away with it? (Or think they are. As the show proves, people catch on they’re up to something.) And what happens when they’re busted? Do they care they’ve been caught red-handed? How do the people they cheated with react? Do they know about the other lover or are they surprised to find out they’ve been lied to also?
If you’ve ever wondered any of the above, watch the show. It answers all of those questions and more.
