Let’s face it, babies are cute even when they fill up their diapers. We all know that. But when it comes to baby feet, I am completely obsessed.
I just love little baby feet. They are cute, compact and unlike adult feet, adorable. I love the little toes and the little flat arches that kick out in excitement. And yes, I even love the smell.
People often talk about that great baby smell that you get when taking a whiff of a freshly washed warm little baby head, but I prefer the little feet. For one thing, there are two of them to sniff, cover with kisses and love. Baby feet are also just right for tickling, and playing little games, such as footsie (using your hand to the baby’s foot, of course) and “This little piggy.”
I didn’t think I would like baby feet before my first son was born. In fact, the feet always seemed to cause me discomfort when the baby decided to give a sharp kick to my kidneys or bladder. But once he was born, it was a different story. I just loved those little feet. The were squat and square like mine, but with wide toes like his father’s. Those feet would grow declare firm decision making, to stomp around the house expressing his displeasure at something.
I’m sad to say that now that my first baby is an official kid, the obsession with his feet is long gone. Most of the time, I only pay attention to them if he comes off of the school bus with sneakers untied and a hole in his sock.
Fortunately for me, there were two more sets of baby feet to come along. My daughter’s feet were delicate little princess feet and resembled my mother’s. This was a little girl who would grow into a preschooler who loves dresses, princesses and twirling around light on her feet as a ballerina.
My third child came into the world with noticeably long toes. They were tapered, and he loved to wiggle them. Belonging now to a toddler, they are still small enough to be covered with a hand or two and covered with kisses that make him giggle. These feet are often found climbing things and getting into trouble, relying on a sly and charming smile to get them back out.
