National Frozen Food Day

Hold on to your fresh fruits and vegetables because today, March 6th, is National Frozen Food day. I have to laugh when I run across these on the internet, but they are a fun excuse to cook something completely different for dinner.

The first frozen foods were sold to the general public in 1929 by Birdseye. The idea came when Clarence Birdseye was on a fur trapping expedition and saw that the native people of Labrador were freezing food to preserve it. An industry was born! I cannot imagine living without my freezer, frozen vegetables in the winter will carry me through until summer.

Today would be a perfect day to clean out the freezer, I think that is what I will do for dinner tonight. I always find bags of frozen vegetables with just a tablespoon or two of food left in them, tonight those will go in a soup. Can you make dinner from your freezer? Try it.

One of Hailey’s favorite things to have for dinner is taco soup, which is basically ground meat, taco seasoning and vegetables. It’s a great way for me to sneak veggies into her meals. Black beans are great in it as well, but I don’t imagine you have those in the freezer.

If soups aren’t your thing, how about a casserole? There may even be some frozen rolls in there you can throw on the top.

If all else fails, have a potluck out of the single ingredients in your freezer. Hash brown, peas, carrots, corn, whatever meat is lurking in there, maybe there is a lone egg roll, or one of those little pizzas. Frozen burritos anyone? Hot pockets, TV dinners, think of all the things that would never have been invented if it had not been for those first frozen foods.

To reward yourself for cleaning the freezer, ice cream with frozen berries and whipped topping. You deserve it for getting rid of all that freezer burned food. Besides, the ice cream won’t last forever, even in the freezer.
