National Military Appreciation Month

May is National Military Appreciation Month, and members of our Armed Forces and their families have been able to take advantage of some truly wonderful limited time discounts. In areas where the local economy depends on military families, local businesses have been offering specials through the month of May on many different services.

Probably the most spectacular offer for active members of the Armed Forces was from Jet Blue Airlines at the beginning of May. For a few days, military passengers could book travel for the month of May on Jet Blue for $1 plus the taxes and fees. This was a great deal for soldiers on leave, and for cadets at the US Service Academies booking travel to visit family before embarking on their summer assignments.

A list of activities saluting the military for the month of May can be
found here.

There are a number of discounts available in honor of National Military
Appreciation month. They are listed here. Among the most interesting discounts in the list are double and triple Rewards Zone points from Best Buy. Barnes and Noble offers free Standard Shipping and 6% off on all orders through a special link on www.nman.org. More offers are added daily.

Geico and State Farm discount auto insurance for active military – contact your insurance agent for details concerning eligibility.

Southern Wesleyan University in South Carolina has a special deal for
active members of the military and their spouses – this year, they will
discount tuition! Many colleges and universities discount tuition for active military and those who have been honorably discharged. Tuition discounts for spouses are less common – and very necessary. Military spouses cope with disruptions in their careers, education, and family life with relocation, deployments, and responsibilities. Their ability to continue their education is vital. Offering support to the military spouse is a great way to support the person on active duty. Some colleges also discount tuition for children of active service members as well. It pays to inquire when you apply or are researching colleges.
