National Organic Harvest Month

I am going to ignore that today is National Coffee Ice Cream day and focus on it being National Organic Harvest Month. I love the word “harvest.” It reminds me of apple orchards and pumpkin patches. I love purchasing produce from local farmers this time of year. I also love making fun food from apples and pumpkins. I am blessed enough to live by several apple orchards and pumpkin patches that deliver quality organic produce. If you cannot visit a local orchard or farm this time of year make sure to stop by the organic section of your grocery store. You are likely to find an array of beautiful produce grown safely and which chemicals or pesticides. If you are what you eat then the last thing you want to eat is toxins. If you never considered eating organic before then try it this month. You will be surprised that if you cut out processed foods and chemical laden foods for organic foods your grocery bill does not have to be unaffordable.

Why Eat Organic:

Impact on the Earth is not as great as nonorganic farming. Organic farmers use less energy and water.

Foods are grown without harmful pesticides.

Soil is high in nutrients which will product foods high in nutrients.

No genetically modified organisms or GNO.

No hormones use in livestock or animals on the farm.

Tips:

Make sure the products you purchase have the USDA Organic seal. If not, you could be purchasing something with only a 1 percent amount of organic ingredients.

Apples, peaches and strawberries are among the produce which absorb pesticides the most. Avoid purchasing them nonorganic if you have to pick and chose.

Remember that just because you purchase on a farm or orchard it may seem natural yet it may still be grown using pesticides. Make sure you go to a farmer dedicated to growing foods organically.

Make a cleaner choice this month and feel good about. Perhaps I will look for organic soy coffee ice cream while I’m shopping.
