National Yoga Month 2011

September is National Yoga Month and the perfect time to start your practice or get back to it. If you have always wanted to try yoga, but haven’t signed up, there are opportunities to try yoga at studios around the country at no cost.

The purpose of National Yoga Month is to build awareness in the community about the benefits of yoga and how the practice can help physically, emotionally and spiritually. The goal is to raise awareness of the benefits and encourage people to try yoga.

As part of National Yoga Month, yoga studios around the country have chosen to participate by offering a free week during the month of September. Although the month is nearing its end, the free yoga coupons are good through the month of October. So find a studio in your area and sign up this week and you will still have another month to try yoga for free.

In addition to offering a free week of yoga, studios and other organizations around the country are sponsoring special events. These include public yoga events, such as yoga in the park, family yoga classes and yoga events for kids. Organizations in some cities are hosting yoga festivals with seminars, entertainment, lectures, guest speakers, ceremonies and other events.

National Yoga Month will culminate in a special event on September 30 called The Time for Yoga: A Global Community Yoga Practice. This event is a worldwide yoga practice that will take place at 7 pm local time. Students and studios are encouraged to observe the event by practicing at the appointed time for one hour, ending with savasana at 8 pm followed by 15 minutes of meditation for universal peace.

You can find more information about National Yoga Month, find studios in your area and find places that are offering free yoga online. Visit yogamonth.org to get involved or find events in your area.
