Anyone can open a box and pull out a string of colorful lights or plant a set of plastic reindeer pulling a stuffed Santa the yard, but nothing beats taking a little extra time to deck the halls with some natural holiday décor. In “Natural Christmas Décor Part 1” I provided tips on how you could easily and affordably add some “live” decorations to your home in time for the holidays.
Here are some additional ways you can add a fresh look to your home:
Tabletop Decorations
Tabletops are great places to display the natural bounty of the season. But, instead of the traditional bowl of fruit you could try dipping apples, grapes, pears and plums into egg whites, then rolling them in granulated sugar. Then, place the fruits in a big glass bowl with pinecones or fresh greens.
To give your holiday table a real blast of Christmas green and red consider creating a bouquet with seasonal greens and red roses. You could also decorate your table with glass vases filled with cranberries and limes. For a more rustic look, place natural materials – cones, nuts, berries and spices –around candles.
Holiday Garden Decorating
Your garden may be covered with a blanket of snow, but that doesn’t mean you should count it out as part of your natural holiday decorating. Our neighbor uses his garden fountain to display candles and berries.
Another idea: Forced bulbs. Forced bulbs are wonderful for winter decorating and paperwhites and amaryllis are perfect for the holidays. Here’s a simple way to make an elegant holiday decoration from forced bulbs: Place a single paperwhite in a vase with crushed green glass (you can buy recycled crushed glass at garden supply stores), and add it to an end table. You can also buy forced bulbs with a forcing kit. It’s not only convenient, but easy as well. Just add water and a few weeks later—viola—instant natural décor.
