If you think you’re a little crazy about dental health, you aren’t alone. Americans spent nearly four million dollars on natural oral hygiene products in 2002 according to Nutrition Business Magazine — and that was a fifteen percent increase from 2001 spending.
So why the increase in natural dental care products? People are more label-conscious these days. Not only do they read the labels, they worry about what’s on the label. Some people are choosing natural ingredients in their toothpaste and mouthwash because it’s tried and true. Herbal concoctions and essential oils have been used in health and beauty for thousands of years. Some people choose natural products for what’s left out — like artificial colors, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and other chemicals.
Essential oils that are good for dental care:
- Peppermint
- Spearmint/Wintergreen
- Eucalyptus
- Cinnamon/Cassia
As an added bonus, these fresh-smelling essential oils don’t just freshen the breath — they have antibacterial and antibiotic properties, and can help kill germs and bacteria that cause bad breath and lead to gum disease and tooth decay.
The drawback of herbal supplements and other natural products is that they are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. They’re also often not endorsed by the American Dental Association — this isn’t because they don’t work, it’s there haven’t been enough clinical studies to make things official. But you aren’t going to see many (if any) official seals on your all-natural dental products.
If you aren’t sure whether or not a natural oral care product is right for you, ask your dentist or hygienist for advice. Certain people may need to use a special toothpaste or mouthwash; for example, if you have problems with cavities, your dentist may want you to use a toothpaste with extra fluoride. Your family doctor may also have information about possible interactions with your current medications — just because something is natural doesn’t mean it can’t cause problems with other health care products you use.
