Need to Furnish Your Home? Act Now

If you are looking to furnish your home any time soon, whether that means rooms of furniture or a few art and decor pieces, you may want to keep reading. That is because now is the time for great bargains from antiques to durable family-friendly pieces.

Why is it the right time to furnish your home? There are a number of reasons.

First, right now there are a lot of younger baby boomers going into retirement who are ready to downsize their living space. At the same time, older baby boomers are moving into retirement homes or with family. They no longer need households full of furniture. Estate sales companies are seeing a boon in business, more than they can keep up with in some cases. This means that they have to move the stuff quickly, emptying an entire home in a few hours in some cases. Large items, such as furniture are priced aggressively to get it out of the door.

Look for estate sales in nicer neighborhoods, where the home owners were likely to be professionals, if you want the best selection and the best quality.

Secondly, it isn’t just baby boomers who are downsizing. Regular families are finding that their larger homes are too much to handle financially and are choosing to downsize into smaller living spaces. That means that there will be a lot of gently used furniture available, in some cases, current items that are just a couple of years old. While you won’t see many estate sales for this type of buyer, look instead to the online classifieds, such as Craigslist.org.

You may also be able to get some nice free furniture through your local freecycle group. Remember that a $45 slip cover can make almost any couch, love seat or chair like new.

Thirdly, many furniture dealers are faced with a glut of furniture inventory that they can’t move due to the slow economy. There are also a number of furniture store closings. Take advantage of this to negotiate some good deals on brand new furnishings for your home.
