Did you know that just by having neighbors you can save money? That is because when neighbors band together they can support each other in many endeavors, including saving money.
Sharing your goods and services with your neighbors is a great way to build community, too. There are many ways to share resources. For example, you may want to join a bulk food store or a food co-op as a group. This will save you on the membership fees and allow you to get the savings from bulk purchases without anything going to waste.
You can also share on equipment or service rentals. Do you need to have a couple of rugs shampooed? You can ask the service to give you a discounted rate if three or four of your neighbors have the same service done on the same day.
Heavy equipment rental can be cheaper when you rent it by the week. A wood chipper, for example, can be used for a day or two by each neighbor, thus splitting the cost.
Equipment you already own can be shared as well. We own a snow blower which can be shared among our neighbors. In return, we have access to a large leaf blower, a small tractor and plenty of professional handyman expertise.
What about season tickets to sporting events or theater events? You’ll get great seats and won’t have to commit to the time and the expense of all of the events.
For personal services, you can share such things as child care. My neighbors and I rely on each other to get kids on and off the school bus and watch the kids when things come up. We’ve saved plenty of money this way, and have been happy to have extra playmates for our kids when it has been our turn to watch everyone.
