One of my favorite things in the entire world to do is to buy my children gifts. There is just something about the way their eyes light up when they are given a gift. I love the anticipation and excitement. That’s why I don’t think I will ever stop doing St. Nick with them, at least not now. I don’t think you can ever be too old for St. Nick.
Earlier this week my children were able to enjoy another year of St. Nick. I filled their stockings with candy as I always do but was really struggling with what else to put in there. Typically I put in a gift card for something like iTunes or Gamestop. However I wanted to do something a little different this year.
Suddenly it came to me. My children enjoy particular scents. My youngest son thinks Axe is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I find the products to be a bit expensive so I only buy them for the guys in my house when they are on sale.
My daughter absolutely loves the scent of vanilla. My oldest son recently discovered that he is an Old Spice kind of man. So I decided to purchase their favorite scents in these gift packages.
The gift packages were much too large to fit into a stocking, so I hid them and put a note inside their stocking directing them to where they could find their goodies. My oldest son laughed when he saw what everyone got and asked, “Hygiene products?” I said, “Well, you are all at that age where you could really work on that.”
It might sound strange to get them hygiene products but I know my children enough that they actually appreciated it. They all seemed eager for their next shower. However more than that, I think they really appreciated the fact that there is still some part of childhood they can hold onto. They may not believe in the jolly old man but they still like the idea behind what he does.
While our teens may seem like they are too old for certain things, bear in mind that even as adults there is still a little child in us. I don’t think teens are too old for St. Nick, so don’t take it away just because they have reached a certain age. Embrace what little bit of childhood is still within them.
