New Home Old Stuff

If you just moved into a house or apartment and haven’t had time or money to decorate to your taste, you may feel a little discouraged. For many people starting out in a first house or apartment, the look of the home does not reflect the owner’s taste or style, but more often than not reflects one’s budget.

You can make your home look great no matter if it’s small or large, even if you are limited for time and for cash. Start with simple, inexpensive projects that make a great impact.

For example, that hand-me-down loveseat or sofa you just moved into your home can instantly be transformed and given an update. Don’t know how to make a slipcover? Don’t worry! Just pick up an inexpensive set of attractive sheets.

Remove the cushions and cover the body of the piece with the flat sheet. Pull taut and staple the ends to the underside (you can remove staples later to change it). Next, cover the cushion with the fitted sheet. Pin the sheet in place from the bottom with large safety pins. You can cut off any excess if necessary. Use the pillow cases to make easy accent pillows. Cover existing throw pillows or pick up some fiberfill. Cut off the excess and sew the open end closed, seal it with iron on hem tape, or leave the excess, bunch it up and tie it with cording or ribbon.

Other hand-me-downs or used furniture can be camouflaged as needed too. Throw a tablecloth over that old dining table for a crisp, clean look. Use placemats as table runners to cover those scratched end tables.

For the price of a little fabric, you can give your old furniture an update instead of replacing it. You can make your home reflect your personality instead of your pocketbook.
