New Hope For Those With Skin Cancer

In previous blogs I noted that I am at high risk for skin cancer. I grew up in Hawaii long before “UVA,” “UVB,” and “SPF” were regularly used in conversations about sun exposure. Instead, the only thing I applied to my skin prior to venturing out in the hot Hawaiian sun was baby oil. As a result, I’ve suffered many serious burns and have had to visit the dermatologist on several occasions.

Who knew my efforts to achieve a “healthy” golden glow would lead to my current situation of diligently conducting self-skin examinations on a daily basis? I know way too much about squamous cells, biopsies, and of course, melanoma—all consequences of my days as a “tanorexic.”

Now, I am learning about a new cream that some doctors are touting as a tool to fight skin cancer.

Researchers in Arizona are studying a new skin cancer prevention product called perillyl alcohol or POH. It’s a topical cream that doctors are having patients test out, then checking to see what changes in the skin can be identified as a result.

Doctors say they have found that when patients applied the perillyl alcohol they recorded a decrease in the number of skin cancers. However, they are quick to add that tests are still ongoing. But, for people like me who are at risk, it’s encouraging news. After all, if a topical cream can really reduce or reverse sun damage, and reduce the possibility of skin cancer (and keep me alive and out of the dermatologist’s office) that can only be a good thing.

Doctors at the Arizona Cancer Center where the tests are being completed say they are hopeful perillyl alcohol will aid those with milder forms of skin cancer… and perhaps one day those who suffer the worst kind—-melanoma. Melanoma has the highest mortality rate of all skin cancers and to slow the progression of such a deadly disease would be significant. Not only for those suffering with the condition, but for people like me, who blindly worshipped the sun and are now paying the price for doing so.
