First it was the Backstreet Boys, now it’s New Kids on the Block. What’s next… a 98 Degrees reunion?
In case you haven’t heard the good (or bad, depending on if you were a fan) news, word has it the legendary boy band New Kids on the Block is getting back together.
If you grew up in the ‘90s then you likely swooned with the rest of the nation over Jonathan Knight (who is now a 40-year-old real estate developer), Donnie Wahlberg (a 38-year-old singer turned actor), Joey McIntyre (a 35-year-old new dad and former “Dancing with the Stars contestant), Danny Wood (now a 38-year-old music producer) and Knight’s brother Jordan (a 37-year-old solo artist).
An official announcement from the band is reportedly coming in the next few weeks. Though die-hard fans can visit the New Kids on the Block website (it sat dormant for years), which is now back up and running. But, don’t expect much. I logged on the other day and there isn’t much more than a television graphic with out of focus flickering photos of the “Kids” in their heyday, and a link inviting guests to sign up for additional information and future announcements.
Rumors of a reunion have been swirling for months, but now it appears after 18 years apart the “boys” are serious about getting back together. I suppose after selling more than 50 million albums and becoming worldwide teen idols (before calling it quits in 1994) it must be hard entering your middle age years without one last hurrah.
Personally, I wasn’t a big New Kids on the Block fan. I remember their hit “Hangin’ Tough” and I had friends who were convinced they were going to be the future Mrs. Donnie Wahlberg or Mrs. Jordan Knight someday.
I’m still confused as to who their target audience will be. Are they planning to entertain their now 30-something former groupies or will they be going after Miley Cyrus’ fans?
