Last Friday, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest crossed the 1 billion dollar mark at the global box office and is the third film in history to cross that finish line following in such great footsteps as Titanic and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Disney is justifiably proud of their accomplishment since the film has been breaking records all over the world including holding the current #1 film spot for 2006 in the U.S. box office along with the #1 in the international box office.
The Dead Man’s Chest opened in Italy yesterday and the film’s success promises even more turnout for the third film scheduled to be released in 2007. Overall, Disney has done great this year because they’ve had a number of profitable films this year including Pixar’s Cars which was actually pretty darn good and has made the names Mater, Sally and McQueen household names — at least here at home.
The following may contain some spoilers, so if you haven’t seen the movie, beware:
While I am very happy for Disney’s obvious success with the film Dead Man’s Chest — I have to wonder will the success be sustained by the third one. Like the Matrix trilogy, the second movie ended with a cliffhanger that requires a third movie to complete the actual storylines. Dead Man’s Chest does not stand fully on its own. It’s certainly a sequel in every essence of the word, requiring the first to let you know who the characters are.
The third movie is going to require a great deal of payoff to make the second one as fantastic as the reception appears to be saying it is. The Matrix trilogy, in my opinion, didn’t pay off the promise in the first two films. Since Disney happens to be pretty good at delivering on promises, magical wishes and glass slippers – chances are the third and final movie in the trilogy will deliver.
For now, here’s to Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann and Jack Sparrow along with their great crew, actors, directors and writers. Did you enjoy Dead Man’s Chest?
