With an interesting last name like “Womack,” a person might be tempted to go in for something a little more traditional. Either that, or be tempted to become one of a kind. That’s what country singer Lee Ann Womack has done. Although her sound is somewhat similar to other lady country singers of this era, her persona is all her own.
I remember seeing her for the first time on a celebrity version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.” She wasn’t the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree, but neither did she posture or try to make herself look any different than what she was, and that was charming. She took help from the other celebrities when needed and was humble enough to admit when she didn’t know something, but she wasn’t an airhead, either.
I then heard her song, “I Hope You Dance.” There’s a lot to be said for that song, including its Grammy win in 2001, but the one line that stood out to me is, “When you come close to selling out, reconsider.” It gave me strength to get through a rough patch I was in, and I feel a lot of gratitude about that.
Now Lee Ann is celebrating a new release. Her album “Call Me Crazy” is set to come out this fall, much to the delight of her fans. She hasn’t released an album since 2005, and admits that after winning Album of the Year, there was some pressure to do even better. But with a blend of classic country and country-ish pop, she’ll hit the nail on the head, like she always does. In fact, she’s had three gold albums and four platinum albums, and two Grammys including the one mentioned above for “I Hope You Dance.” All this since appearing on the scene in 1997, a relatively short time ago for all she’s accomplished.
I’ll be keeping my eyes out for that new release this fall and will get back to you on it then. Stay tuned!
