If you have an older home, it may have tile in one or more bathrooms that isn’t exactly your idea of stylish or attractive. In many cases, the colors that were popular in the past don’t really do much to inspire us in coming up with updated design ideas. Sometimes, it’s simply a case of being old and showing signs of wear.
What’s a homeowner to do?
Start by scrubbing the area thoroughly. Next, decide if re-grouting tile is necessary. Fresh grout can make your tile look like new, so consider Re-grouting Instead of Replacing Tile.
After re-grouting, you might just find that you can live with the existing tile, even if the color isn’t your first choice. You can play up that color and make it look as if you chose it on purpose, rather than it appearing to be a throwback.
Pink seems to be one of the most offensive colors and one that was very popular decades ago when many homes were built. There are various shades of pink and peachy colors but many people aren’t particularly fond of the pinks. To distract from so much pink in a small space, you can add design elements in another color so that they outweigh the effect of the pink.
Black and white against pink can really make a statement. Off white with just the tiniest touches of pink throughout creates a nice, soft look. Burgundy accents will make the space look richer. On the other hand, you could choose another color entirely. Various shades of green or gray work quite well.
Suppose your color is gold, avocado, or turquoise. You can use the same tricks, overwhelming that color with other shades in order to tone it down. White is lovely with turquoise. Shades of sage will blend nicely with avocado. Golden colors can be toned down nicely with tans and beiges.
