Fur and fashion. Mention those two words in the same sentence around PETA supporters and you can bet the fur will be flying. But, on the runways of New York Fashion Week, fur has turned into (gasp!) a must-have item for fall—good looking fake fur, that is.
Leave it to designer Marc Bouwer to send models down the runway in mink minidresses. Fashion magazine editors say fake fur is hot, hot, hot for fall.
“If the past two falls have been about jewel-encrusted clothing, this fall will be all about fur-enhanced clothing,” one fashion analyst told reporters.
From outerwear to knitwear, red-carpet gowns to skirts, according to experts, fur is the trim we women will have to have as part of our fall wardrobes.
Designer Anna Sui may not agree. Her Fashion Week designs were fur-free. Instead, Sui stuck with “bouncy and playful” designs. Her latest collection has earned the title: “Hippie chic – 30 years later.” It includes loose minidresses in kitschy prints–there was one that looked like a newspaper and another one covered in safety pins–few even had tassels connected to the hem.
Sui also stuck with what is emerging as a popular palette for fall– brown, black, gray, purple and metallics.
Meanwhile, at her show, Vivienne Tam paid homage to legendary designer Paul Poiret – one of the first Europeans influenced by Asian fashion. Fashion experts say Tam expertly mixed his “passion for detail and love of column dresses with her signature use of ribbon embroideries and cutouts.”
And finally, Michael Kors. Kors is known for making clothes that people want to wear and his Fall 2007 collection didn’t disappoint. At his show, models sashayed down the runway wearing his new looks for fall, including wraparound cardigans made of caramel-colored cashmere, super-soft turtleneck sweaterdresses, olive-green plaid coats with sable fur collars, and cashmere sweatpants.
One fashion magazine editor proclaimed his creations: “Sexy, chic, wearable, glamorous, elegant and edgy—perfect for the glamorous urban warrior.”
As for his color palette, Kors used bright orange, blues and metallics. His standout metallic pieces included a gold fringe dance dress and gold cheetah-pattern brocade dress. MEOW!
