You can’t visit New York City without going home with a few souvenirs, right? Continuing in my series spotlighting some of the city’s most unique shops today I’m throwing out a real zinger–big cheese in the Big Apple. Given that I currently reside in a state known for its dairy products I’m really putting my neck on the line here, but so be it.
Take a look at some other must-visit Manhattan shops.
Murray’s Cheese Shop
Located downtown at 254 Bleecker St. between 6th and 7th Aves. Murray’s Cheese Shop refers to itself as “the nation’s leading cheese purveyor.” It’s been profiled on the Food Network so many times it has become a Manhattan institution. I think a big part of its appeal is that the staff lets customers sample as many cheeses as they like. And given that the store stocks more than 250 types, you could fill up on the samples alone. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and they don’t hesitate to recommend their personal favorites. Murray’s has been a staple in Greenwich Village since 1940 and has a smaller shop in the Grand Central Market.
Jeffrey
If you have time to stroll around New York’s Meatpacking District don’t miss the chance to pop into Jeffrey. It’s a mini-department store chock full of designer labels for women and men. And, I’m not just referring to the dresses, shirts, slacks, and skirts. Jeffrey also has an impressive selection of designer shoes such as Prada and Christian Louboutin. Sure, the prices are lofty, but you get what you pay for. And as an added (free) bonus Jeffrey practices a unique policy that states that each salesperson acts as a personal shopper for his or her client.
Intermix
If you are not from New York you might be unfamiliar with Intermix. If you live in the city then you know that Intermix is as common as Dunkin’ Donuts. The trendy store has five Manhattan locations (1003 Madison Ave; 210 Columbus Ave., 98 Prince St., 901 Broadway; and 365 Bleecker St.) and is filled with the latest collections from American and European designers. The shops are cozy (see: small), but you’d be surprised how many unique outfits are packed into the small space. In addition to the latest tops and bottoms, Intermix carries shoes and accessories ranging from affordable to astronomical.
