I will be the first to admit that I love reality shows. I do not watch them all, but I am definitely a fan of many – perhaps too many for my own good. But when I read about CBS’ newest reality show “Armed and Famous,” I have to admit I was a bit scared.
In this show, celebrities are sworn in to protect the law as reserve police officers of the town of Muncie, Indiana (population 66,000). This past Tuesday, about 200 townspeople showed up at the Muncie City Hall auditorium to see the stars sworn in. Whom can they expect to help protect their city? The reserve officers are actor Erik Estrada (“CHiPs), Jackson sister and singer La Toya Jackson, reality star Jack Osbourne (son of Ozzy), Jason “Wee Man” Acuna (4 foot 7 inch skateboarder who gained fame on MTV’s “Jackass”), and former WWE superstar wrestler Trish Stratus.
Erik Estrada rarely had to carry a gun as Frank “Ponch” Poncherello on the 70’s hit show “CHiPs,” but he did have experience stopping bad guys – at least on screen. He also has reality show experience, having appeared in VH1’s “Surreal Life.” We practically saw Jack Osbourne grow up on his father’s reality show “The Osbourne,” which ran for three years. La Toya Jackson has had plenty of television exposure as has Trish Stratus, who left the WWE earlier this year.
After being sworn in by Muncie Police Chief Joe Winkle, the celebs were told that roll call was at 6 o’clock and they were not to be late for it. The celebs will work along side real city police officers and will carry badges and guns. Chief Joe Winkle says his main focus is to showcase his police department. He also states that the celebs will receive the same training as any other reserve officer.
I don’t know…all I can say is I hope Muncie doesn’t have much crime!
