Now that one of their biggest stars is expecting a baby the all-kids network is considering airing a special for its young viewers about sex and love.
Executives at Nickelodeon say they are currently in talks with Linda Ellerbee, the former TV journalist who has hosted a number of kid-friendly shows in the past which dealt with controversial subjects ranging from same-sex parents and AIDS, to the Columbine shootings and President Clinton’s impeachment scandal.
Following the news that Nickelodeon’s 16-year-old “Zoey 101” star Jamie Lynn Spears is pregnant, Ellerbee told network bigwigs she felt a show addressing teens and sexuality should be aired.
“I think it’s important that it be done in a measured way, and not just to feed the beast of news stories,” Ellerbee told reporters.
As of today no decision on the TV special has been made. Nickelodeon has also made no comment on Spears’ situation beyond the statement it issued shortly after the news broke, which read: “We respect Jamie Lynn’s decision to take responsibility in this sensitive and personal situation. We know this is a very difficult time for her and her family, and our primary concern right now is for Jamie Lynn’s well being.”
Ellerbee says even if the special doesn’t take place right away parents should use this moment to talk with–but more importantly–listen to their kids about the topic of sexuality. The veteran newswoman also added that if the special is given the go ahead, rather than focus strictly on Spears, she’s considering conducting a broad discussion about how people know they’re in love and when it is the right time to have sex. The discussion would also feature topics including people’s value systems and peer pressure.
In regards to the rumors that Nickelodeon is planning to pull the plug on “Zoey 101,” network executives say they have made no decisions on the future of the popular program aimed primarily at youngsters aged 9-14. Filming for the show’s fourth and final season has finished, and episodes are scheduled to begin airing in February.
