Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have done it – they were married on June 25, 2006 in Sydney at the Cardinal Cerretti Chapel. Nicole wore a white gown designed by the house of Balenciaga. She wore a white veil that covered part of her face, drop pearl earrings, and held a white rose bouquet. Her children by her first marriage to Tom Cruise, daughter Isabella and son Connor, were a part of the wedding party. The groom looked very handsome dressed in a black suit and tie with a white rose boutonniere.
Balenciaga has been a favorite designer of Nicole for years. In 1996, when he was 25, Nicolas Ghesquiere took of the struggling house of Balenciaga. Founder Cristobal Balenciaga, who started the house in 1937, had been a huge success at one time. Among his more notable clients was Princess Grace of Monaco. But, the once influential house fell from fame after Balenciaga’s death in 1972. Others tried to restore the house’s former fame, but none were successful until Ghesquiere took over in 1996. He found great success among Hollywood starlets with his leg-lengthening pants in 1998 and his motorcycle bag in 1999 was a must have item for most female celebrities.
Ghesquiere can rest assured that he has done as much for Balenciaga as its founder when an exhibit opens on July 6th at the Louvre museum of fashion and textiles. Designs from both Cristobal and Nicolas will hang side by side. Nicolas Ghesquiere began his design career early with an internship at the age of 15 with Paris designer Agnes B. At 19, he became an assistant to Jean Paul Gaultier. His love of combining new with retro looks (he loves the 80s) has helped make Balenciaga a success once again. This year, he was named to Time magazines “Time 100: The People Who Shape Our World.”
In addition to Nicole Kidman, Ghesquiere can count Chloe Sevigny, the Olson Twins, Jennifer Connolly, Natalie Portman, and Madonna among his fans.
