No-Sew Halloween Costumes

Before you know it Halloween will be upon us. Now is the time to start thinking about costumes. Each year since Tyler was born I have sworn that I would make his costume and each year I find myself at Walmart the day before Halloween along with dozens of other frantic moms trying to pick an acceptable costume from the leftovers. This year probably won’t be an exception. Although I am advising you to get your costumes together early, I probably won’t take my own advice. So do as I say, not as I do!

If you are looking for some fun no-sew costumes you might want to check out Fabriclink. Fabriclink is an “everything you always wanted to know about fabrics but was afraid to ask” site. It mainly covers care of fabrics and household furnishings but it also has a section called the Halloween Costume Closet. Just click on the link that says, “The Halloween Costume Closet is baaaack”, once there you can sign up to have the instructions for 14 time saving costumes emailed to you. The site also has instructions from Velcro USA on several popular costumes including a witch, a carrot and an angel.

There’s a whole section on how to be a pirate including how to talk like one. And the pirate costume is a no-sew one. You can also find do-it-yourself patterns, plus you can order ready made costumes. Of course you can use your own imagination (ask your child for help) and come up with some great costumes that require little or no sewing. It’s not that hard, here’s two examples:

Robot: Use a cardboard box with holes for arms, legs and head. Glue pie plates to the front for headlights, decorate with foil and you‘re ready to roll.

I want my Mummy: Jell the hair and pull it away from the face, then apply white makeup. Take strips of muslin and wrap around the entire body.

Tyler has already informed me that he wants to be Superman. After looking at the $29 price tag on the costume he wanted, I’m thinking if I get started today, I could possibly make a much better homemade (and cheaper) version by the 31st (I didn’t say which year!).
