I don’t know about you, but I am bad about singing long in the car to my favorite tunes. Of course, if you could hear me, you could cringe – my voice is nasally, which is bad since my allergies are generally acting up. I’d say I sounded like a hoarse bullfrog trapped underwater. With a cold.
Anyhow, some average Joes can sing well. And, sometimes, rock-n-roll dreams come true. Such is the case of Tommy DeCarlo of Charlotte, North Carolina. Like many of us, Tommy dreamed of being a rock star. But, we all know how far fetched those dreams can be, so he settled like most of us. He became a credit manager at Home Depot, married, and became the father of two.
But, he still loved to sing along with his favorite band, Boston. His daughter posted him singing Boston songs on her MySpace page after the lead singer of the band, Brad Delp, committed suicide in 2007. He had no idea that one small gesture would make his dreams come true.
He sang with a karaoke track because he had sold his keyboard for Christmas presents. But, the singing was so good it confused even the best – the remaining Boston band members. When band founder Tom Scholz heard the singing on his wife’s computer, he assumed she was listening to them. “She said, ‘It’s some guy in North Carolina singing your songs.’” But, Tom insisted – “I know Brad’s voice, and that’s Brad.”
Once Tom plugged speakers into the computer and realized it was a karaoke track. The band decided Tommy was so good that he should be their next lead singer. Tom emailed Tommy and now Tommy made his on stage debut with the rest of Boston last August at a tribute concert for Brad.
Pretty amazing story, huh? However, this is not really the first time something like this has happened. Stay tuned and I will tell you about another rock-n-roll dream come true.
