Not Too Late for Summer Camp Fun

My 6-year-old is gearing up for her first summer camp experience. She’s too young for sleepaway camp, but she is counting down the days until her day camps begin. In the meantime, she has soccer, tennis and basketball classes to keep her busy.

Parents looking for ways to keep their kids educated and entertained during summer break from school don’t have to look far for fun options. I just received an email from a company that runs several kids’ camps across the country announcing space availability for last-minute participants.

One camp in particular caught my eye, especially for my water-loving kid. Seacamp is designed for children who want to explore life under the sea.

Located in Big Pine Key, Florida, Seacamp was founded in 1966 and is considered a leader in marine science summer camps for kids. The award-winning camp’s tropical location in the lower Florida Keys enables it to offer a truly unique marine science program. The camp attracts world-class marine science instructors who help young campers discover the fascinating world that lives beneath the ocean surface. Kids work at their own level and learn basic ecological principles and concepts.

Seacamp also offers several courses in SCUBA diving for older campers. The courses are designed to give teen divers training in SCUBA techniques, so that they will be able to safely use SCUBA as a tool for underwater research. If your child is already certified prior to entering camp he or she can participate in one of the many marine science/SCUBA courses available through Seacamp.

In addition to the intense ocean activities available at Seacamp, kids can also enroll in a Red Cross course in lifeguarding, which includes workshops in First Aid and CPR. The course is designed to increase the campers’ ability to recognize and avoid hazardous water conditions and deal with any challenges they might face on or in the water.

The price for 18-day session is about $3500 not including a $375 SCUBA fee for campers interested in becoming certified.
