Some of these contests are ongoing and are available year round. Some of these contests are available to any students regardless of whether or not they’re home schooled or attend traditional school. Other contests are available only to homeschoolers. If you know of a contest that you’d like me to feature here, please send me a private message so that I can make sure and mention it in my next month’s feature.
This is an ongoing contest open to 3rd through 8th graders (social studies and science) and 2nd through 12th graders (math). The cost to enter is just $30 per year and includes all three categories if you choose. They post the winner’s names online but other than that there is no prize.
It seems to me that this might be a great edition to a home school curriculum, especially for a gifted student. My son is not old enough yet, but you can bet next year we’re going to give this a try.
National History Day Competition
This contest is open to students in grades 6th through 12th. You can enter as a team or as an individual. Your student chooses a type of entry: documentary, exhibit, performance or paper, and then presents it at a National Competition at the University of Maryland. There is a theme each year and this year’s theme is Conflict and Compromise Throughout History. If you win, the contest offers cash and scholarships as prizes. The competition is held in early June. (But you’ll need to start preparing now.)
Sylvan Dell Picture Book Writing Contest
This contest is open to students working at a high school level. (No age is given and so I assume that if you have a younger child working with a high school level curriculum, that this is acceptable.) Entries are due May 1. The winner receives $200 and consideration for publication in 2009.
