We love jerky in our house. It doesn’t have to be beef, though that and buffalo are the best. Turkey jerky is popular here. It’s a little different texture and taste; still good, just different. The one I haven’t tried yet is bear jerky. Yes, bear jerky. We’re in bear season here in the Northwest and jerky is a good way to preserve the meat. A whole bear has a LOT of meat on it.
Don’t gasp too loudly at the killing of those “poor defenseless teddy bears by the big, bad hunters.” I’ve been hiking with my sons’ Boy Scout troop for the past couple of months. A couple of weeks ago we took a nice 11 mile hike in a local park (it’s a big park). The week after we were there, an aggressive male bear mauled and bit a 51-year old mountain biker, putting him in intensive care. Anyway, all that to say I hope they catch the bear and make him into jerky!
The only problem with jerky is that it’s very expensive. Retail in the grocery is $6.99 for a 4 oz. bag here. Know how long a 4 oz. bag lasts in my house? Let’s just say a lot less time than it takes for dh to earn $7. It’s a treat. That’s why I was so excited to see the Oberto sale. Some of the sale items are only a small discount from the regular club price, but there are others that are simply fantastic! There’s free shipping with a $75 purchase. I can’t believe I just bought $75 in beef jerky. For that, though, I got 15 boxes of individually wrapped 1 oz packs of 24. That’s more than 22 pounds of meat! I’m not worried about it getting eaten, only about making sure I get MY share.
If you’re interested, you should jump on this one quickly. The better stuff will sell out very soon. If you have a family member in the military, or are participating in AnySoldier, it will be a welcomed blessing. That, or you can come up my way and go bear hunting!
