When it comes to preparedness there are so many aspects to cover. Each month I am going to write a blog with a goal in each area of preparedness. The areas I feel are important are emergency preparedness, food storage, physical preparedness, and spiritual preparedness. You can join in my family’s preparedness efforts or offer suggestions of your own.
Emergency preparedness is essential. In reality more people actually use the supplies they have stored for emergencies then anything else. This month my goal is to store two week’s worth of water for my family. That equals a gallon per person per day. Additionally you should include water in your emergency kit as well as a method to make drinking water safe.
Fall is a great time of year to put up excess food for your food storage. You can find produce cheap at roadside stands and farmer’s markets. You may also want to purchase and store the fall and winter squash. It is also a great time to stock up on canned pumpkin, which can be difficult to find during the year.
To grasp the entire aspect of preparedness you should help your family prepare in other areas as well. It is important to have the physical stamina necessary to hike out if there were a disaster. October is great month to hike. You may want to plan a family activity of a five-mile hike as a family. You can have your children (if they are old enough) carry their own lunches on their backs.
It is important to prepare yourself and your family spiritually as well. If you are not already having family prayer together, you may want to make that your monthly goal. Additionally you may want to help your children to begin to make the family prayers more personal by encouraging them to pray specifically for each other. You can also focus on the quality of your personal prayers this month.
My family and I will work on these goals, and I will report back on them when I post November’s goals for preparedness at the end of October. I would love to hear your experiences or personal/family goals for preparedness as well.
