Octuplet Story Controversy Continues

A few days ago, I wrote about the California mom of six, Nadya Suleman, who just gave birth to octuplets. In case you are as bad at math as I am, that is eight babies. Nadya already has six children, is divorced, and living with her parents in a three bedroom house outside Los Angeles.

Earlier reports from Nadya’s mother, Angela, seemed to lean towards the fact that Angela supported her daughter. She said her daughter had always been obsessed with having children, but was a good mother. Now it seems that Angela was not being 100% truthful.

Angela has told the Associated Press that she is not supportive of her daughter implanted with the embryos. She said, “It can’t go on any longer. She’s got six children and no husband. I was brought up the traditional way. I firmly believe in marriage. But she didn’t want to get married.”

Angela said that Nadya suffered from closed fallopian tubes and that she underwent in vitro fertilization to have all her children, including the octuplets. She admitted that her daughter had always wanted children, bur rather than go into a profession that worked with children, she started having them.

This obsession with children caused Angela enough stress that she went to a psychiatrist for help. The psychiatrist told Angela she should ask Nadya and her brood to leave the house. Angela said she felt a responsibility to her daughter and didn’t’ want to kick her out of the house. However, Angela has now warned Nadya that “I’m going to be gone,” when she gets home from the hospital, which is estimated to be in a few days.

It has also come out that at least one of Nadya’s six children has special needs. Yolanda Garcia said that she helped care for one of Nadya’s sons, who is autistic. Garcia told the Long Beach Press-Telegram that Nadya seemed pleased with herself for having had all the children. When Garcia asked her how she could afford the in vitro fertilization, Nadya told her she got paid for it. Garcia didn’t press for the details.

Nadya’s fertility doctor’s name has still not been released, but I did read that there were forty six doctors and staff in the delivery room for the eight babies (six boys and two girls). Angela also confirmed that those were all the frozen embryos that Nadya had, so this will be all the children she has. We can only hope!

The Calgary Herald is reporting that Nadya is now seeking at least $2 million dollars to tell her story, in addition to commercial sponsorship (i.e. free diapers). It is also reporting that she wants a television career as a child-care expert.

Is it just me or does this story just get crazier and crazier? Now Nadya’s mother Angela doesn’t even seem to support her anymore, her father is working to support her family, and now she has reportedly released a monetary figure of how much she wants to sell her story. I don’t know, but right now, I am concerned for the children – all the children. I mean, I sometimes have trouble keeping up with my one four year old. I know moms who are able to juggle four kids, but seriously, 14 children and on her own, it seems? Yeah, yeah, I know about the Duggars, but at least that is a mother/father family unit.

Then, there is the sheer financial obligation of raising 14 children. Obviously Nadya cannot work and has no husband to support her. And with 14 children, I don’t imagine there are many men lining up for dates.

Let me know what you think!
